Accretion  Text, 3d printed asteroids (steel, polished nickel), floor text. 2018.
Installation views: Field/s One, Sluice HQ.

The installation plays with idea of cosmic immensity by permeating the whole exhibition space but in discrete and subtle ways. A series of miniatrure asteroids occupy a vast space in their distributions yet remain at the edge of perceptibility.

The accompanying text relates to theories of planetary accretion and how our solar system and asteroids were formed. (In astrophysics, accretion is the accumulation of particles into a massive object by gravitationally attracting more matter, typically gaseous matter, in an accretion disk). The asteroids are made from nickel-iron, a material relevant to their composition. A polished, mirror-like surface makes them perceptible through their interaction with light.

The work is informed by After Finitude and Exo-Science Fiction by French philosopher Quentin Meillassoux in which he questions scientific statements about entities or events that occurred anterior to the emergence of human thought and the experience of biological life.
