Chasms is an ongoing series made by digitally processing RAW data fromspace telescopes – such as Hubble and the James Webb – using scientific software. Various algorithmic functions are applied to visualise the data – a process Hill likens to a digital darkroom. The data is then sent through various physical and digital transformations in an attempt to explore the chasm-like depths of deep space and time – as well as photographic space. Photography and sculpture approach space and time from different perspectives: combined this allows for a rich exploration of these dimensions.
In this second series, p hysically manipulated printed data has been passed through a variety of watery treatments such as saturated, floating and reflected. French philosopher Gaston Bachelard likens water to a giant mirror through which the universe catches its first glimpse of itself. Leading from this thought, this series engages with ideas of Panpsychism, a viewpoint that suggest consciousness is a fundamental property of all matter.
