In the wake of knowing,  Piezography* archival pigment prints. 2023. 2 prints at 891 × 594 mm, vertically stacked.
A long-exposure photograph of the interior of the Helgustadir mine, in Eastern Iceland where Iceland Spar – a very optically pure calcite, or crystallized calcium carbonate – was extensively mined from late 1800 to early 1900s. This mineral was widely used in scientific instruments across physics, chemistry, and geology at the time.

The image is vertically stacked against another image of the spoil heap above it, echoing sedimentary layers.

The work thinks about technoscience and the extraction of mineral resources in the pursuit of knowledge. The use of black and white, and thematic darkness of the prints looks towards ideas of ‘unknowing’ as described  by artist and technologist James Bridle.

Printed using Piezograpy* process – a high quality black and white, fine art digital printmaking process that uses an 11 carbon pigment ink set to achieve a wider range of tones.
