The Book of Sand   Video generated by a machine learning algorithm trained on dataset of images from a book on minerals and crystals. Duration variable.
A video generated by a DCGAN trained on a dataset constructed from the complete imagery from an encyclopeadia on crystals and minerals. Images are generated by sampling points the machine learning model’s ‘latent space’ – the potentially limitless and unknowable space of the algorithmic imagination. The unfolding and refolding of inorganic material – or fundamental matter – through deep time cycles, is also potentially infinite. The work contrasts concepts of embodied, geological and technological time.

Titled after the short story by Jorge Luis Borges that features a book with infinite, incomprehensible pages: ‘The Book of Sand ... because neither the book nor the sand has any beginning or end.’
